Another way of using old mag. articles

Just walking a block away from school gives you so much of inspiration!

After class today, I went to the Containter Store on 6th Ave & 18th St. with Marco and Asli to check out some containers, possibly a toolbox for my pcomp materials. This store always have wonderful selection of designed boxes and organizers.

I ended up buying nothing because Marco advised me that I could get a nice tool box for 10 bucks at a different store (I forgot the name..I have to ask him again) and that the Containter Store only had some so-so toolboxes for around 25 bucks or more. Read more

The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

Bagels with Red

Bagels, coffee and cream cheese!

Bagels, coffee and cream cheese!

This morning, I went to “Bagels with Red” at 10am. The head of ITP, Red Burns, has kindly organized this Friday morning bagels & coffee session for students.. how sweet! And it was the first Bagles with Red in the last two years! There wern’t so many students because it was early on Friday (and perhaps ‘cuz of TNO the day before), but a group of people ended up discussing about the future of ITP, Red’s view of ITP, upcoming exhibitions, possible alumni show, critic & presentation sessions, new facilities in the Japanese room (one of rooms on the ITP floor), etc. Read more

A day with Servo

For the week 4 assignment for physical computing class, I used a small motor called servomotor (servo), which is a small device that has an output shaft, to create a simple analog circuit. The shaft can be positioned to specific angular by sending the servo a coded signal. As the coded signal changes, the angular position of the shaft changes.

After completed wiring all materials and programming, I had a trouble uploading the code to the Arduino board. When I hit the “Upload to I/O” button, it was on the uploading status forever as in the photo.

New nail :)

New nail design!

Yaay new nail design!

One of things I adore is to do my nails. So I’ve got the new nail design today — yaay! My nails are coated with a very specific type of mani called Calgel, which is a UV-based gel that lasts long and can protect my natural nail. It’s similar to biosculpture.

Calgel products are not available at drug store or any cosmetic venues, because you have to complete a special training session in order to purchase them. So I usually go to a specific Japanese nail salon to get my nail done, but I would love to take the training course sometime soon, so I can finally do them by myself. There was one calgel class I wanted to take in NYC, but the schedule did not work out..I may try again next semester. For now, I’m happy :)

Understanding electronics

Power connector - soldering

Power connector - soldering

For week 3 assignment for Physical Computing at ITP, I measured voltage of circuits I made. The outcome was fine that I was able to see various voltage values from different circuits.

One big mistake I made in the beginning was the wiring for a DC power connector. I didn’t know how to make a power connector, and I didn’t know there’s instruction available on the Web. For some reason I was very embarrassed to ask about the wiring, because I thought it was such a basic question, so I assumed the wiring and started soldering both red and black wires to one tab. When I tried connecting it to power, of course it never worked. After carefully reading the assignment description on the Web again, I found step-by-step instruction for soldering power connector! How stupid…I took all wires away and re-soldered red and black wires to the tab. I should have asked someone in the beginning so I didn’t have to go through this poor mistake:( …Again….”Never assume anything.”

Lunch

Fried rice w/salad

Fried rice w/salad

My lunch today? I cooked a simple Japanese-style fried rice with salad. For ingredients, I had carrots, bacon, onion and green scallions sauteed with vegetable oil and a bit of butter, mixed with rice and egg. And I seasoned them with low sodium soy sauce and black pepper. I also had fresh lettuce topped with cheese and caesar dressing. They were delicious, and made my day ^_^*
